We are urging all members to remain vigilant following reports of two scams currently targeting Credit Union Plus members. These scams are being carried out by text message and by phone call, with fraudsters attempting to obtain personal and financial information.

Please take a moment to read the details below and protect yourself and your finances.

Scam 1: Fraudulent Text Message from 51100

Some members have reported receiving a text message from the number 51100, claiming to be from Credit Union Plus.

The message states that a new payee has been created on your online account and instructs you to call an 01 Dublin phone number if this was not you.

This text message is not from Credit Union Plus.

It is a scam designed to create panic and encourage you to call the number provided. If you do, fraudsters will attempt to extract your personal and financial information.

Please remember:

• All genuine text messages from Credit Union Plus will come from the sender ID CUPLUS (in capital letters).
• We will never ask you to call an 01 Dublin number to verify activity on your account.
• Our only official phone number is 046 90 21395, which is listed on our website.

If you receive this text, do not respond and do not call the number provided.

Scam 2: Fraudulent Phone Calls from 01 Dublin Numbers

We have also been made aware of members receiving phone calls from an 01 Dublin number, where the caller claims to be from Credit Union Plus.

The caller may say there is potential fraud on your account and ask for personal details such as:

• Date of birth
• Email address
• Phone number
• Confirmation of a one-time passcode

These calls are not from Credit Union Plus.

These fraudsters are attempting to gather enough information to access your funds.

Please remember:

• Credit Union Plus will never call you from an 01 Dublin number.
• Credit Union Plus will never ask you to confirm a one-time passcode over the phone.

If you receive a suspicious call:

1. Hang up immediately.
2. Do not provide any information.
3. Contact us directly on 046 90 21395 using the number listed on our official website.

How to Protect Yourself

• Do not respond to unexpected texts or calls asking for personal information.
• Never share one-time passcodes with anyone.
• Always independently verify by contacting us directly using our official number.
• If in doubt, pause and call us first.

Your security is extremely important to us. If you believe you may have engaged with a scammer or shared information, please contact us immediately.

New text message and phone scams in circulation claiming to be from your Bank/Credit Union.

FraudSMART is advising consumers to be on alert for a new type of text message and phone scam currently in circulation claiming to be from your bank/Credit Union.

These are very convincing scams so please ensure you read the information below in order to protect your personal information and bank account.

How does the scam happen?

You may receive a text message stating that you should expect a call from a staff member of your Bank/Credit Union using a landline or private ID.

Unfortunately, scammers have tools that can make it look like the message appears within an existing, genuine text thread that you may have from your bank in the past.

The text message and/or phone call may claim to be from the security or card services department of your Bank/Credit Union.

If you accept the call, the fraudster will try to convince you to part with personal, financial and/or security information.

In some cases you may receive an authorisation code and be asked to input it on screen to ‘secure your account’, ‘cancel a fraudulent payment’ or ‘process a refund’ – however this actually gives the fraudster access to your account.

The fraudster may imply that if you don’t act immediately, it will have negative consequences, for example, that money will be lost from your account.

The fraudster may even advise you to delete your mobile banking app or ask you not to log into your Bank/Credit Union accounts for a period of time. In order to make you believe this instruction is genuine you may receive multiple calls advising there is a delay in receiving your ‘new’ online banking log in details to keep you away from your account. While you are waiting to hear back from the caller, who you believe to be your Bank/Credit Union, the fraudsters may be moving money out of your account.

What should you do if you receive a suspicious text message or phone call?

Be very cautious of any unexpected texts or phone calls and if in any doubt, ignore the text message or hang up on the call, and phone your Bank/Credit Union immediately.

Do not use the phone numbers provided within the text of a text message. Contact your bank using the number on the back of your debit / credit card.

Do not reply to unsolicited text messages or provide personal or financial information. Do not click on a link or attachment from unsolicited emails or text messages.

If someone is pressuring you on the phone to take urgent action, hang up and call the number on the back of your debit / credit card.

Never give away personal information, bank card payment details, bank account details or security details such as your PIN or online password to anyone.

Block the sender of a suspicious email or text message and delete the message.
