Problem Gambling and Support

What is Problem Gambling?

Gambling can be an enjoyable activity for some, but for others it can become a serious issue that affects health, finances, and relationships. Problem gambling is defined by behaviour that becomes difficult to control, leading to harmful consequences for the individual and their family. It can take many forms, including spending more money or time than intended, chasing losses, or hiding gambling activity from loved ones.

Problem gambling doesn’t just impact the person struggling with it. Partners, children, parents, and close friends can also experience emotional stress, financial strain, and breakdowns in trust as a result of gambling behaviour.

Recognising the Signs

Common signs of problem gambling can include:

  • Feeling unable to stop or cut back on gambling.
  • Spending more time or money than you can afford.
  • Borrowing or using savings to fund gambling.
  • Increased anxiety, mood changes, or irritability.
  • Withdrawal from family activities or responsibilities.

If you recognise these signs in yourself or someone close to you, it may be time to reach out for support.

What Credit Union Plus Can Do to Help

We understand that problem gambling can have a serious impact on your financial wellbeing. To support members affected by gambling harm, Credit Union Plus now offers voluntary blocks on gambling-related payments made using your credit union current account debit card.

If you feel that restricting access to gambling transactions would help you manage your finances and protect your wellbeing, you can ask us to place a block on gambling payments. This block will prevent your debit card being used for gambling transactions, giving you space and control while you explore recovery and support options.

To arrange a gambling payment block, please visit your local Credit Union Plus branch to complete a short voluntary block instruction form.

Branches are located in Navan, Dunshaughlin, Ballivor, Clonmellon , and Ballyjamesduff.

Support and Confidentiality

Seeking help is a sign of strength. All discussions with Credit Union Plus and external support services are treated with confidentiality and respect. You do not have to manage this alone.
