Not every disability is visible, some are non-visible.

Credit Union Plus Supports Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Initiative

At Credit Union Plus, we believe everyone deserves to feel understood, supported, and included, especially when it’s not immediately obvious they need a little extra help.

That’s why we’re proud to announce our membership of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower, a globally recognised symbol that allows individuals with non-visible disabilities to discreetly signal that they may require additional time, patience, or support when going about their daily lives.

Whether it’s a learning difficulty, chronic pain, mental health challenge, or any other non-visible condition, the Sunflower helps create a more compassionate and responsive environment, and we’re committed to making that a reality in every one of our branches.

We strive to create an accessible and welcoming environment for all in our communities”, said Phil Hegarty, CEO of Credit Union Plus.

Taking part in the Non-visible Disabilities Sunflower initiative is another step in the journey of Credit Union Plus to improve accessibility and inclusivity for all members. We are inviting all our members with non-visible disabilities to visit any of our branches and take part in the Non-visible Disabilities Sunflower initiative when availing of services.

All Credit Union Plus employees have now completed dedicated training to help them recognise the Sunflower symbol and understand the best ways to offer appropriate assistance. So, whether you wear a Sunflower lanyard, badge, wristband, or other identifier, you can expect our team to respond with empathy and understanding — whether that means taking a bit more time, explaining things more clearly, or offering a quieter space if needed.

Paul White, CEO of Non-visible Disabilities Sunflower, welcomed the membership:

We are delighted to welcome Credit Union Plus to the global Non-visible Disabilities Sunflower. 1 in 5 people in Ireland have a disability, and 80% of those are non-visible, meaning many of Credit Union Plus’s members will be affected. The Sunflower is an effective tool that indicates to the teams in the branches that a member may need an offer of support, extra time and understanding, ensuring that access to financial services is guaranteed.”

As part of this initiative, members are welcome to call into any of our five branches in Navan, Dunshaughlin, Ballivor, Clonmellon or Ballyjamesduff, to collect a free Sunflower lanyard, to wear whenever they choose.

Together, we’re making Credit Union Plus a place where everyone feels seen and supported.
